The AI Centre and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) are pleased to announce their partnership to help develop and evaluate the next generation of medical AI technology.

The partnership will see joint projects between researchers at the AI Centre and NPL investigate how AI algorithms measure and define outputs accurately.

Part of our core mission at NPL is to provide solutions to tackle the most important national challenges in the UK and support fast growing sectors of our economy deliver impact. Artificial intelligence, and its application in healthcare, has great potential to improve quality of life and grow a whole new industrial sector where the UK is already very strong. By partnering with the AI Centre, NPL can provide our expertise to a wide consortium of clinicians, researchers and commercial developers already operating in this space, and help grow it further.

Michael Adeogun, Head of Life Sciences and Health, National Physical Laboratory (NPL)

NPL is the UK’s National Metrology Institute and provides cutting-edge measurement science, engineering and technology to underpin the UK's prosperity and quality of life. This extends to digital technology, where NPL uses its expertise to provide confidence in data, enabling innovation. The AI Centre is a team of AI, data science, research and clinical experts working collaboratively across academic institutions, the NHS and industrial organisation to discover, develop and deliver new AI.

This partnership allows us to combine the AI Centre’s experience in healthcare and AI with NPLs expertise in standards and metrology. By working together, we can drive new innovation and increase the robustness of medical AI.
